Beskrivning
Media forms a crucial cornerstone of democracy to inform citizens, provide space for debate and scrutinize those in power.
Today, the possiblity for media to play this important role is however challenged in many ways, including from economic and political pressures, the rapid digital transition and the abundance of misleading, unverified or simply false information that is spread in different channels.
On 7 November 2022, Vice President of the European Commission Věra Jourová will visit Stockholm and give a keynote speech at Europahuset about the Commission’s work on values and transparency and upholding the rule of law.
She will also engage in a discussion with the audience in on the Commission’s recent proposal for a European Media Freedom Act, which is part of the Commission’s broader European Democracy Action plan, announced in December 2020.
Key elements include EU legal safeguards to protect editorial independence, transparent and predictable financing of public service and stronger safeguards against surveillance of journalists.
The discussion will be moderated by Ms. Eva Hamilton, former CEO of Swedish Television and will be held in English.
The discussion will be livestreamed on our Facebook and Youtube channels.
